AIS is the information statement

The Annual Information Statement can list salary, interest, dividends, securities, and other information reported against the PAN. An AIS row is information to check, not an automatic addition. The office is at 515 Trichy Road, Singanallur.

Quick answer

This page is the Annual Information Statement. Form 26AS stays on the Form 26AS page. The Taxpayer Information Summary stays on the TIS page. A figure that disagrees with Form 16 stays on the mismatch page. Do not send the income-tax password in chat. Call +91 94454 38387.

What it lists

The Annual Information Statement can list salary, interest, dividends, securities, and other information reported against the PAN. Log in to the portal, open Services, then AIS. Download the AIS and the Taxpayer Information Summary as a PDF or JSON. The Taxpayer Information Summary is downloaded with the AIS. That summary is on the TIS page. It is not Form 26AS, and it is not a return.

An AIS row is information to check, not an automatic addition. Do not copy a sale, dividend, or interest row into the return until the broker statement, interest certificate, or employer record supports it. A wrong PAN can place someone else's information on your AIS. Do not leave out salary that was paid. Bank interest, a second employer, and other AIS rows that are yours still belong in the return. Form 16 often omits bank interest. Use the interest certificate. Where the bank deducted tax, that certificate is Form 16A, on the Form 16A page.

What it is not

Form 26AS shows tax credits such as TDS and TCS. The credit in a return should follow 26AS. That statement is downloaded via the TRACES portal link, on the Form 26AS page. Form 16 is the certificate from the employer for salary and the tax deducted on that salary, on the Form 16 page. A difference between Form 16 and the AIS is a check, not a filing error by itself. That check is on the mismatch page. If Form 16 and the payslips agree, use those figures. If the AIS is higher, check a second employer, a perquisite, or a row reported under the wrong PAN.

Downloading the AIS does not file the return. Feedback on the AIS is a separate step on the income-tax portal. That feedback does not by itself change the return. A difference left in the return can show up in a 143(1) intimation. A percentage is not copied here.

Before the return is filed

  1. Download the AIS and the Taxpayer Information Summary from Services, then AIS.
  2. The desk checks each row against Form 16, the interest certificate, or the broker statement.
  3. You approve the draft. The return is filed after that approval.
  4. You complete e-verification yourself.

The return that uses this statement is quoted before it is filed. The first discussion is free. The length depends on the file.

Common questions

Is the AIS the same as Form 26AS?

No. Form 26AS shows tax credits such as TDS and TCS. The Annual Information Statement can list salary, interest, dividends, securities, and other information reported against the PAN.

Should every AIS row go into the return?

No. An AIS row is information to check, not an automatic addition. Do not copy a sale, dividend, or interest row until the broker statement, interest certificate, or employer record supports it.

Does feedback on the AIS change the return?

No. Feedback on the AIS is a separate step on the income-tax portal. That feedback does not by itself change the return.
